Disturbing Dream

Thursday, February 24th, 2005

This I just woke up from this dream. It was so odd I had to write it down so I can remember it later.

I remember being at a bank or some kind of office with the officials who work there and some Binghamton University officials (who were wearing BU apparel instead of professional apparel). They were concerned about the state of other SUNY schools. They said that New York State was cutting funding from necessary programs and budget items everywhere (across the board) while increasing funding in areas that didn’t need it (as an example: Janitorial services.) They speculated the State was doing this to justify closing down the smaller schools (by saying that increasing their funding did not improve the schools.) When I asked if Binghamton was in danger, since it’s an University center and not just a college, I recieved no response.

Driving back from this (it was daytime when I left the meeting, but this next part takes place at night), I’m driving down Route 111 and coming up to the Route 347 intersection and I’m about to make a left turn. I get into the lane and line up behind the car already in the lane. Turns out it’s a police car, facing THE OTHER WAY (i.e. they are facing me.) He puts on his lights and another police cruiser enteres the scene from the other side of the intersection, lights on. I’m asked to roll down my window and the office asks me why I called them. Since I didn’t call them, I say so, but they (there are about 7-10 officers there: one of them questioning me, and the others laughing at my responses) don’t believe me. One of the officers (who appears to be Asian), is looking around my car, peering inside and just moving around skittishly. He seemed very inept and shy, which was odd for a police officer in this group. When I told him to get away from my car, he did. Back to the original officer, I asked where I called them from: he says from a Texaco station (that’s a lie: I never stop there and haven’t been there recently). I try to tell him I didn’t call, but he’s hearing nothing of it, and his associates are still laughing at me (at this point, they’re outside their car just standing around. All of them are no more than 10 feet away from me, but I’m still in the car and they’re just hanging around their’s.) I ask the officer for his badge number, but he just points to some shiny object on his shirt. He says “my badge is right here.” I can’t see if there are even numbers on the badge from his distance, so I ask again. He then responds: “I got your badge right here…” He lifts up his shirt and points to his nipple. I put the car in gear and take off. Officers do not follow.

This next scene is disturbing / depressing. Going down 111, I almost hit these 2 guys (pedestrians) who look like they’re just play-fighting in the middle of the road. What’s worse is that there are 2 small boys imitating the exact behavior of they adult counterparts, also in the middle of the road. I have to slow down a lot to get around them. I notice beer and soda bottles scattered all over the street. I go to make a right turn onto a smaller side-street, and I see more of the same. Many people on the street, some in the middle of the road, not caring where they were or what they were doing. The people just weren’t cognizant of the fact that they were on a road and that I was in my car trying to drive on said road. For lack of a better term, it looked like a ghetto.

It was one of the more disturbing dreams I’ve had in some time. I could probably do some analyzing of it (like, why New York State needed to get rid of the SUNY schools, why they had to do it like that, why the police acted the way they did, and why the people didn’t even acknowledge my presence on the road), but logic seemed to have no place in this dream.

Sports Night Musing

I’m watching Sports Night (specifically, Episode 38: Celebrities)…

Jeremy Goodwin meets a porn star in a bar while constructing a dodecahedron out of olives and toothpicks. WTF is that?

Hot girls don’t talk to guys that make dodecahedrons out of coctail olives and toothpicks at the bar.

I meet hot girls at parties, but that’s mostly thanks to my good looks and mysteriously blue eyes. Girls love my blue eyes.

Jeremy is a dork who got a porn star to like-like him. That’s MESSED UP.

Student Association: Dillemas as far as the eye can see…

I believe I said some time ago that the Student Assembly was on course of hitting an iceberg. I think I’ve spotted what that iceberg may be…

At last night’s SA meeting, Nicole Mendolera, the SA Finanical Vice President gave us some grim news. Off Campus College Transport (“OCCT”), the organization which runs the blue buses, are going to need a lot more money to stay running in the near future. The insurance company which covers OCCT has merged with another insurance company, and as a result, OCCT’s insurance went up from about $30,000 to somewhere closer to $100,000. These numbers are by no means exact, but as you can plainly see, this is a real problem. Add to this, at the same meeting, Harpur’s Ferry, the campus’s student-run EMS organization, has asked the SA to give it a separate line item for equipment maintenance (coincidently, getting a line item means getting guaranteed money from each student who pays the activity fee.) That’s another $20,000 that needs to be found. Even though the dissolution of SASU gives the SA about $25,000 or so… these 2 budget demands are still very high, and it could cause students in the know (and pissed off this money is getting thrown around like this) to react unfavorably. And with Elections coming up (and Elections are good for at least one scandal), I know things are going to get hairy everywhere the SA can possibly see.

The SA can’t just pull $70,000+ dollars out of its ass: money the SA allocates to student groups comes from a Student Activity Fee, which is currently set at $78.50. This fee is paid (I beileve) once a semester (it could be once a year, but I’m not too sure. I just tried to look it up in the SA Archives, but they are incomplete and of no help to me), and it’s a mandatory fee which gets renewed every 2 years via campus-wide refferenda. So, it makes sense that in order to increase the amount of money OCCT can get, the SA needs to increase the total amount of money it recieves from students. The proposed increase is (again, I believe) $5. And, to make up the difference (since that increase alone won’t cover the costs), OCCT will need to be trimmed down: removing the most unused runs, cutting hours, etc. Hopefully, student groups don’t get their money allocations reduced. I’ve been told they won’t, but I’m still a bit leary.
