Deal or No Deal Milestone – $1,000,000 case picked, sold.

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

On April 26, contestant LaKeesa Bright, who had initially picked case 17, accepted a deal for $215,000. This turned out to be a bad deal, since her case contained $1,000,000, the top prize on the show. For the US version of the show, this is the first time a contestant had the top prize in his or her case.

She had a great board with 4 cases left: $400, $1,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000. She said No Deal to a bank offer of $300,000+ and elected to continue the game. The next case she opened was $500,000. With her board of $400, $1,000 and $1,000,000, the offer of $215,000 was accepted.

This situation is a great example of why it will be a long time before we see anyone walk away with the show’s top prize. The contestant not only has to pick the correct case (1-26 chance) but he or she also has to go the entire length of the game. If LaKeesha had not knocked out the 500K, she would have continued until she did knock it out. Saying No Deal when you have 2 big amounts left is logical, since the player can rely on the fact that if a big case is opened, the bank offer will stay somewhat reasonable since there’s one other big amount left. But, if $1,000,000 and $400 are the 2 biggest amounts left, it’s a lot harder to justify continuing.

The bottom line: We will only see someone open their own case (i.e. play to the end) with the million still in play is if they have another big amount (100K or higher) left. That way, if the 50-50 chance doesn’t go the right way, the player will still have a nice amount to walk away with.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story quotes.

I am hard pressed to find a more quotable comedy than Dodgeball. I could post every quote I like, but that would be a long, boring read. Instead, I direct you to IMDB’s page of quotes in the movie. There is one quote which is missing which I think should be on there…

“Pepper needs new shorts!”

“Wielding” the House Gavel…

TV Guide: Do you ever get to wield the House gavel?
Donald Sutherland: Only at home. Mostly at night

source: TV Guide Apr 17-23 2006 (Vol. 54 No. 16 Issue #2768, pg. 71)

C’mon… no, really. C’mon. Donald Sutherland makes a penis joke in TV Guide and it’s not all over the news? Ridiculous.

IT GETS THROUGH BUCKNER! HERE COMES KNIGHT! THE METS WIN IT!

Baseball goodness and NES goodness. Fantastic stuff coming from both a Mets fan and a fan of old-school NES. Length of video: 8:30.

Commander in Chief

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

Since it’s no longer conflicting with House on Tuesdays, Commander in Chief goes back into the rotation! Sweet!

I have to play catch-up, but tonight’s episode seemed solid enough. What I like about the show is that it plays up the fact that Mackenzie Allen is the first politically independent president as well as the first female one. The obvious draw of the show is the latter reason, but I personally like the former reason a lot more; having the incumbant not be a Democrat or Republican forces a third, viable candidate into the mix and that alters strategy immensely. Templeton alluded to that in the beginning of the episode when he said that if the electoral votes get split evenly, the election goes to the House where he’ll win since he’s the Speaker. The Democrats only shot is to make sure it doesn’t get to that by compromising Mack, and they do so by nefarious means. (That’s also something else I found interesting: I would’ve expected the Republicans to do something like this. Showing both parties as “dirty players” is excellent writing [or a portrayal of reality depending on what you believe.])

Anyways, I should probably download the season on iTunes or something. You can do that now, you know. Download TV shows on iTunes, I mean. There’s a whole bunch: Commander in Chief, Drawn Together and Lost are the ones I know of off the top of my head.

What I’m Watching was updated. (Commander in Chief, Deal or No Deal on Wednesday added.)

Company Incorporated – Film and Video Productions

Props to Tara for leaving the link to the site in her AIM profile.

The site hosts a collection of videos they produced, 2 of which include Travels and its sequel Travels 2 which are both decently good short films. Both feature Binghamton University in them, so that’s immediately a plus in my book. Also, they’re both interesting and deep and stuff, so I recommend watching them on that basis, too.

V for Vendetta

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

Using Scott Keith’s words, it should be more like “V for AWESOME”

The movie was awesome, fantastic, and all those other adjectives that mean “OH FUCK YES.” Let me tell you why this movie was awesome. First, I love the protagonists. Hugo Weaving is fucking awesome YET AGAIN (fucking hell… Agent Smith… Elrond, now this? This guy can do no wrong), I love the main characters (enlightened, learned and intelligent are qualities that I highly respect and appreciate in protagonists) and especially Natalie Portman. Oh Natalie…

Second, well… there’s much ass-kickey. Third… well… there is no third one. So I’ll just say Natalie Portman again. :D
I shant spoil details. See the movie. See it now!
