1994 Blockbuster Video World Game Championship: The Intro

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

If you tried searching for “1994 Blockbuster Video World Game Championship” on the internet’s most popular search engines, chances are you’ll come up dry. There’s not a lot of information out there on the event, which is a shame for me since it was a big moment in my life way back in the day.

By complete happenstance, while searching for my stored-away college diploma and transcripts, I found 2 folders, contents completely intact, of information about the finals of the competition, which were held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Seeing no other information out there on the subject, it is my self-appointed duty to present this info to the masses, right here, on averagejoe.cc! *cheap pop*

I’ll start off with what I know about the beginning of the tournament (unfortunately, I have no physical evidence to back up my claims of anything before the finals, so you’ll just have to trust me on this.) The tournament started at the local level. Competitors entered the tournament at their local Blockbuster Video store and chose to compete on one of two systems: Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. My choice was the Genesis, so most info I can remember is about that format. For each system, each store would have players compete in 3 games on their system. Each game had its own scoring rubric which was based on the in-game score plus bonuses. Players would have to arrive at the store at specified times to play one of their games. The 3 game scores are combined to determine a store champion who would advance to regionals.

The games for the Genesis were NBA Jam, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Virtua Racer. NBA Jam had players play against the computer for 2 quarters. To get the player’s tournament score, the player’s in-game score was multiplied by some amount (1000, I believe) and a bonus was given if the player outscored the computer (guessing 5000). I don’t exactly remember Sonic 3’s scoring rubric; it may have been in-game score with no additional adjustments. I don’t remember Virtua Racer’s scoring at all. The first round was NBA Jam, where I scored 32 points in my allotted time. I was in 8th place after round 1. Round 2 was Sonic 3, where I was the only person in my store who knew how to get a Perfect in the Special Stage (and for those that remember, Perfects get you 50,000 points). After the second round, I had a commanding lead that I didn’t relinquish. Joe is the store champion! (I still have the shirt to prove it.)

Before the next entry: Pictures of the shirt will be edited into this post.
Next entry: The Regional Tournament and the Finals!
The entry after that: PDF scans of all the paper documents I have (to give the whole story some credibility. Credibility is a nice thing to have, after all.)

NYWC: Psycho Circus

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

$15 was a fine investment for 3 hours or wrasslin’ fun.

The undercard featured a 5-man elimination match to determine the #1 contender to the Hi-Fi championship.  I’m sorry to say that I don’t remember the names of 2 of the participants because names were not announced prior to the show, but Javi-Air took it down after some fine hi-flying action.

Ken Scampi defeated Josh Daniels to retain the Interstate Championship.  Foxy Foxxy was wearing short shorts, which is always a plus.

The Psycho Circus match, the main event, was sufficiently barbaric for my tastes.  It’s a 6 on 6 elimination match and the only rule is that a person is eliminated when they are pinned, they sumbit or are put through a table.  Weapons involved were signs, tables, chairs, ladders, trash can lids, keyboards, chains, barbed wire, 2×4s, and I’m probably missing some things.  High spots of the match included Mason Raige throwing one of the BS Express into the other team (I think MR actually overthrew him, resulting in a HOLY SHIT chant.  Mason Raige shrugs his shoulders.) The heels win the match though.  Whatev. Fun night regardless.  Better than a movie.

I hate Razz

Friday, January 12th, 2007

For those who’ve never played the game, Razz is played exactly like 7-card Stud, except it’s the lowest poker hand that wins and not the highest.

So, of course, when I play Razz, this happens to me. (click to enlarge).

Episode 1 Challenges

Girls: Find 3 books in the library using the Dewey Decimal System
Guys:

  • Get someone to rub sun block on the guy’s back
  • Get a girl’s phone number
  • Borrow someone’s cell phone to make a call.

Standard shenanigans here; Girls not being familiar with the library, guys not being able to approach strangers easily.

Episode 2 Challenges

Guys: Write a stand up comedy routine and perform it at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood (OMFG WHY DIDN’T I SIGN UP FOR THIS???? [My material on printers would've done marginally better than Piao's set, despite me not knowing exactly what he said because of all the bleeping]).

Girls: Act as an anchorwoman: Read a teleprompter for the intro to an interview, then conduct an interview with a co-author of Freakonomics, Stephen J. Dubner (the girls were given study material the night before, but not told exactly what the challenge was until they were brought to it.)

My boss at work told me I should be on this show. The appearence of the comedy challenge only reinforces that.

Nate’s allergy bit was pretty good. Piao’s dirty set was the most unintenionally funny thing I’ve ever seen (people who’ve seen my own set: yes, moreso than mine). Sunjay’s racial-profiling joke was ok, but his delivery completely killed whatever laughs he may have got. Mario stole his Super Mario bit from Dane Cook. Nate got 86% of the vote and deservingly so.

Sheree did well on her interview. Erin tried to bullshit her way through it and bombed. Nadia’s approach was the best given that she didn’t use any material from the book (from what was shown anyway). Cecille’s MTV approach to the interview didn’t impress. Sheree’s win was obvious given the lack of studying on the part of any of the other girls.

Tori’s sad because Sanjay won’t support her, but then she snapped back at him when he said he would’ve offered his help in studying had she not gone to sleep early? Silly girl.

Sanjay & Tori vs. Drew & Erin. Drew & Erin take this down in a sweep. That was fully expected. I’ll miss Tori’s large, fake boobs. Drew and his Star Trek uniform stay on the show, which pleases me greatly.
