Rolling Stone: The Great Iraq Swindle

Reading this made me sick.

Bullet points:

  • Government contractors are ridiculously corrupt. They spend money just for the sake of it, so that the federal government can reimburse them plus pay them 3% of the spent amount (“cost-plus” contracting.)
  • A contractor spent $72 million constructing a police college.  The building was so poorly constructed, the ceilings were reeking of human waste, and a brown substance dripped onto the arm of an army auditor during an assessment of the site.
  • Contractors will send technicians to sites and have them do things they are unqualified to do (i.e. send an air conditioning tech to fix Humvees, and later, have him fix ACs without the proper tools.)
  • Waste of resources (dumping thousands of nails into the desert because “they were too short” and burning a truck because it had a flat tire and no tools in which to change the flat.)
  • When a tech gets injured in the war zone, canceling his health insurance and not paying any bills whatsoever, leaving the near-crippled man with a large stack of bills and no way of earning the money to pay for pain meds or the bills.

So sick.
